Bespoke or Ready to Wear? Choosing Your Engagement Ring in Harrogate

Bespoke or Ready to Wear? Choosing Your Engagement Ring in Harrogate

I get asked this question almost every week in the shop: "Mona, should we go bespoke, or is there something we can just... have?"

Honestly, there's no wrong answer. Both routes lead to a ring you'll love and a piece that's been chosen with real care. The difference is in the journey, and once you know what each one involves, the decision usually makes itself. So let's talk it through properly, the way I would if you popped in for a coffee and a browse.

The Beauty of Coming In and Seeing Both

This is the bit I always tell couples first: you don't have to choose between bespoke and ready-to-wear before you've even walked through our door on Cambridge Street. Come in, try things on, hold a few stones up to the light, and see how different styles actually feel. Photos online never quite capture how a diamond engagement ring catches the light, and you'll know far more after twenty minutes in the shop than after twenty hours of scrolling.

We'll talk you through everything, the bespoke process and what's sitting ready in the cabinet, with absolutely no pressure either way.

Going Bespoke: Designing Something Entirely Your Own

A bespoke engagement ring starts from a conversation, not a catalogue. We talk about the person you're buying for (or the ring you're designing together), the style they gravitate towards, the budget you're working with, and any details that mean something to you both. From there, I sketch, we refine, and we build something that exists nowhere else in the world.

How long does it take? Most bespoke commissions take around six to eight weeks from final design sign-off to collection, sometimes a little longer if we're sourcing a particular stone or working with intricate metalwork. It's not a quick process, but that's rather the point. Every stage is considered.

Natural vs lab grown diamonds This is one of the first things we'll discuss. I'll always be upfront with you: I have a soft spot for natural diamonds, because of the sheer improbability of them, formed over billions of years, each one entirely individual. There's a romance to that which I think matters in an engagement ring. That said, if you're wanting a larger stone on a tighter budget, lab grown diamonds are a genuinely brilliant option, chemically identical, beautifully clear, and considerably more affordable carat for carat. We'll help you weigh it up honestly rather than just pushing whichever is more profitable for us. That's not how we work.

The scope of possibilities With bespoke, almost nothing is off the table. Unusual cuts, coloured gemstones, a design inspired by a family heirloom, your own sketch on the back of a napkin, we can work with all of it. If you've got a clear vision (or even just a vague feeling about what you want), bespoke gives you the room to chase it properly.

Upfront payment Because we're sourcing stones and materials specifically for your ring, bespoke commissions do require full payment before work begins. We'll talk you through the exact figures for your design at your consultation, so there are no surprises.

Choosing From the Window: Ready, Waiting, and Just as Special

Now, here's something I want every couple to know: choosing a ring straight from our cabinet doesn't mean settling for second best. Every single stone in this shop has been chosen by me, personally. I don't buy in bulk from a catalogue and hope for the best. I select each diamond and gemstone with the same care I'd give a bespoke commission, because that's simply how we do things at Fogal & Barnes.

What you'll find ready to go Our ready-to-wear collection leans toward the styles that have stood the test of time for good reason: classic solitaires, elegant clusters, and graceful oval cut diamonds, alongside other traditional cuts and settings. These are timeless, flattering shapes that suit almost anyone, and we keep a beautiful range of natural diamonds in particular within this collection, since they tend to be the most asked-for option when people want something they can simply fall in love with on sight.

The benefits of buying in-store There's something rather lovely about trying a ring on and knowing, there and then, that it's yours. No six week wait, no anticipation, just walking out of the shop with it on your finger, or in a box, ready to open up at that perfect moment. For couples who've found "the one" design-wise, or who are working to a proposal date that's coming up fast, this is often the perfect route.

Here's something else worth knowing: people very often fall for something completely different to what they walked in wanting. You might have your heart set on a solitaire, then slip on a cluster and find you can't take it off. That's the real benefit of trying things on, you get to see how a ring actually looks and feels on your own hand, not just in a photo, and sometimes that changes everything.

And we still offer payment plans on these pieces too, so a beautiful natural diamond ring doesn't have to mean paying for it all in one go. We'll find a plan that works for you.

Ready-to-wear doesn't mean boring or plain! This 19.61 carat aquamarine ring is unique and absolutely breathtaking

So, Which Is Right for You?

Ask yourself a few simple questions. Do you have a strong vision that you can't quite find anywhere else? Bespoke is probably calling you. Do you love the classic elegance of a solitaire or cluster and want to walk away holding it today? Our cabinet has you covered. Are you torn? Come in and let's chat it through properly, in person, with a cup of tea and no clock ticking.

Whichever path calls to you, I'd love to welcome you in to explore both. Pop into the shop at 14 Cambridge Street, Harrogate, and let's find (or design) the ring that's right for you. We're easily reached from Leeds, York, Bradford, and Knaresborough too, so do make a day of it.
