Pre-loved Antique Victorian Shell Cameo Brooch - Bacchante, H. Steiner Adelaide
Some pieces come with a story already attached, and this one is a good one.
Carved in high relief from natural shell, this oval brooch depicts a Bacchante a follower of Bacchus, crowned with a wreath of vine leaves and grape clusters, her hair caught mid-movement by the carver's hand. It's one of the most sought-after cameo subjects of the period, and the depth of the carving here is a cut above the flatter, mass-produced examples you'll often see.
What makes this brooch worth pausing on is the box it still lives in. The fitted case bears the original trade label of H. Steiner, Goldsmith-Jeweller by Appointment to His Excellency Sir James Fergusson, Governor-in-Chief of South Australia, Adelaide. Fergusson held that post from 1869 to 1873, which places this piece firmly in the early-to-mid Victorian period and ties it to a real, documented retailer on the other side of the world. Cameos with this kind of dateable, named provenance are genuinely uncommon.
The brooch fastens with its original C-clasp pin fitting and shows no chips or losses to the carved relief. The case has honest wear to the leather, exactly what you'd expect from a piece that's well over a century old.
What is a Bacchante cameo? A Bacchante was a female follower of Bacchus (Dionysus), the god of wine. Victorian cameo carvers loved the subject for the movement it allowed in the hair, vine leaves and drapery, and it remains one of the most collectible cameo themes today.
Who was H. Steiner? H. Steiner was a goldsmith and jeweller trading in Adelaide, South Australia, holding an appointment to the Governor-in-Chief, Sir James Fergusson, whose term ran 1869 to 1873. The surviving trade label inside the case is a rare piece of documented colonial retail history.
Is the brooch in wearable condition? Yes. The carved relief shows no chips or damage and the original pin fitting is intact and functional.
