So, How Long Does a Bespoke Engagement Ring Actually Take?
So, you've decided you want something truly special. You want the ring - the one that tells her story, your story, and lasts a lifetime; a bespoke engagement ring.
First of all - brilliant decision. And secondly, I promise it's not as complicated or as daunting as you might think.
Let me walk you through exactly how our bespoke process works here at Fogal & Barnes in Harrogate, how long it takes, and (spoiler!) just how few limits there actually are.
So, how long does a bespoke engagement ring actually take?
The honest answer? From your very first appointment to holding the finished ring in your hands, you're typically looking at 4 to 8 weeks.
That feels like a long time when you're excited, I know. But trust me, when you see what we create in those weeks, it'll feel worth every single day.
If you've got a specific proposal date in mind (a birthday, an anniversary, a Christmas morning moment), just tell us at the start. We will always do our absolute best to work to your timeline. The earlier you come to us, the more breathing room we have to make something truly extraordinary, so don't leave it to the last minute, darling!

What actually happens at that first appointment?
This is my favourite part.
You come in, we put the kettle on (OK, only metaphorically, but you get the idea), and we just talk. There's no pressure, no hard sell, and absolutely no judgement. If you walk in with only a screenshot from Pinterest and absolutely no idea what anything is called don't worry - we're here to help!
Here's what we'll be asking you:
- What's her style? Is it classic and timeless? Bold and contemporary? Vintage and romantic? Whatever she likes, we can incorporate.
- What does she wear every day? Her existing jewellery tells us so much: gold or silver tones, delicate or chunky, minimal or maximalist.
- Does she have any ideas already? A saved Instagram post, a ring she's pointed out, a style she loves - bring it all.
- Is there a stone, a material, or a meaning you want to build around?
- What's your budget? There's absolutely no awkwardness here. Budget shapes the design, and knowing it from the start means we can make the very most of every penny.
That's it. We listen, we ask questions, and we start to build a picture of exactly what this ring needs to be.
What makes a ring truly bespoke?
This is where I want to bust a myth: bespoke doesn't just mean "we made it in a different shape."
At Fogal & Barnes, bespoke means the ring is built entirely around you: your story, your heritage, your values, your vision. Here are just some of the ways our clients make their rings completely their own:
Using a stone from a loved one
One of the most meaningful commissions we take on. Whether it's a diamond from your grandmother's ring, a sapphire from a vintage brooch, or a gem that's been sitting in a box for years — we can reset it beautifully into a brand new design. The history stays. The ring becomes something she'll wear every day.
Drawing on your heritage
We've created rings inspired by Celtic knotwork, Indian jewellery traditions, Hawaiian roots, and everything in between. If there's a culture, a pattern, or a symbol that means something to your family, we can weave it in.
Choosing a specific stone
Not all diamonds are the same, and not everyone wants a diamond. We work with natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, morganite, aquamarine, or even something rarer - whatever speaks to you. If you want a particular shape, a specific colour, a certain origin, we'll source it.
Mixed metals
Yellow gold band with a platinum setting? Rose gold with white gold prongs? Absolutely. Metal choices are entirely yours.
Something completely from scratch
You don't need to come to us with a design. Some of our most beautiful rings have started with just a feeling - "I want it to feel like the sea" or "she loves art deco" - and we've built from there.
There are truly no limits. If you can imagine it, we want to hear it.

Step by step: the bespoke journey
Step 1 - The consultation
Your first appointment. We talk, we listen, we gather inspiration. This is relaxed and completely obligation-free.
Step 2 - The design
We come back to you with a design proposal: sketches, CAD renders, or both, so you can see exactly what the ring will look like before anything is made. You can tweak, adjust, change your mind. This is your ring, and we want you to love it before a single tool is picked up.
Step 3 - Stone selection
If we're sourcing a stone for you, this is when we present your options. You can leave it entirely up to us, of course, or give us an idea of exactly what you're looking got. We'll guide you through everything - the cut, the quality, the character - and help you choose the one that feels right.
Step 4 - The creation
This is where the magic happens. Our skilled craftspeople bring your design to life, working in the metals and stones you've chosen. This stage typically takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the complexity of the piece.
Step 5 - The reveal
You come back in, we hand it over, and, honestly, this is the bit that never gets old. Watching someone see their ring for the first time is why we do what we do.

Choosing the gemstones is part of the fun!
A word on budget
Bespoke doesn't have to mean expensive, but it does mean investing in something made entirely for you, with care and skill behind every detail. Our bespoke commissions start from around £2,000, and we work with all budgets in between and beyond.
The best thing you can do is have an honest conversation with us about what you're working with. We'll always tell you what's achievable, and we'll never make you feel awkward about it.
Ready to start?
If there's a proposal on the horizon, or even just a dream of one, come and talk to us. Book a private consultation at our Harrogate boutique and let's see what we can create together.
Because honestly? A bespoke ring isn't just a piece of jewellery. It's the beginning of a story she'll tell for the rest of her life, maybe even something you'll pass on to your grandchildren one day: an heirloom.
And we'd love to be part of it.
